"Local news is a public record of the people and places that make a community work."
Responsive Newspapers was founded on June 1, 1985, by Kathy Ballanfant — a journalist, photographer, and community leader who believed that the stories shaping a neighborhood deserved careful, consistent coverage.
On the very day the company was founded, Kathy's daughter Andrea — known to everyone as Andy — graduated from Lamar High School. That summer, Andy joined the newspaper office, beginning a family tradition of local journalism that continues today.
For more than four decades, The Village News and Southwest News have served as the community record for Bellaire, West University Place, Southside Place, and Southwest Houston — covering city hall decisions, school milestones, local businesses, arts, and the people who make these communities feel like home.

Founder
Kathy Ballanfant's journalism career began in Kansas, where she developed her craft as a reporter and photographer before serving as a news bureau chief in Dallas. She brought that professional foundation to Houston when she founded Responsive Newspapers on June 1, 1985.
Under her leadership, the publications earned local and state journalism awards and became a trusted voice in the communities they served. Kathy was the first female president of the Inland Press Association, the first female Rotarian in her district, and a founding member and past president of the Bellaire Business Association.
Her commitment to community journalism shaped not only the publications but the people who worked alongside her. Kathy passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of local storytelling that continues in every edition.

1985
Kathy Ballanfant established Responsive Newspapers on the same day her daughter Andy graduated from Lamar High School. Andy joined the office that summer.
1990s
The publications expanded their coverage across Bellaire, West University Place, Southside Place, and Southwest Houston, earning the trust of readers and local businesses alike.
2000s
The newspapers earned local and state journalism awards. Kathy became the first female president of the Inland Press Association and the first female Rotarian in her district.
2011
Katie Tong joined Responsive Newspapers and developed a decade-long mentorship with Kathy, becoming an integral part of the newspaper's family and community legacy.
2022
Following Kathy's passing in 2022, her son Ben — who had spent 20 years as a reporter, photographer, and distribution manager — became publisher, carrying the family legacy forward.
Today
The weekly paper and E-Edition work side by side so local reporting remains accessible wherever readers are — continuing 40+ years of community journalism.

Andy graduated from Lamar High School on the very day Responsive Newspapers was founded — June 1, 1985 — and joined the newspaper office that summer. She went on to help develop the publications while obtaining her MBA and law degree, bringing both editorial instinct and business acumen to the family enterprise.
Publisher
Ben was five years old when the newspapers began. He spent nights sleeping at the office while his mother Kathy wrote stories and created advertisements. He studied at the University of Houston and spent 20 years as a reporter, photographer, and distribution manager before becoming publisher following Kathy's passing in 2022. His interests in travel and culinary experiences inform a perspective that keeps the publications connected to the wider world while remaining rooted in the local community.
Staff
Katie joined Responsive Newspapers in 2011 and developed an unofficial decade-long mentorship with Kathy Ballanfant. She has become an integral part of the newspaper's family and community legacy, carrying forward the values and editorial standards that have defined the publications for more than 40 years.
